Anlässlich des Themas »Mauern«, das beim Schwerpunkt »Story Telling und Animation« zur Wahl stand, besuchte Tal Adler die Klasse um über den Sperrwall zwischen Israel und Palästina anhand persönlicher Erfahrungen und politischer Hintergründe zu berichten.
Tal Adler ist israelischer Künstler, Aktivist und Kurator und lebt in Tel Aviv und Wien.

Working on the subject of “Walls”, one of the thematic options available in “Storytelling and Animation”, Tal Adler visited the Kartak class to talk about the Security Wall between Israel and Palestine sharing his personal experiences and shedding light on the political background. Tal Adler is an Israeli artist, activist and curator living in Tel Aviv and Vienna.

Im Rahmen des zweitägigen Workshops, den der israelische Typograf Oded Ezer in der Klasse Kartak abhielt, fand auch ein öffentlicher Vortrag inklusive Buchpräsentation statt. Das Buch »Oded Ezer – The Typographer's Guide to the Galaxy« präsentiert die typografischen Experimente und experimentellen Typografien des visionären israelischen Künstlers und Designers, und ist im Mai im deutschen Gestalten Verlag erschienen.

In the frame of the two-day workshop that the Israeli typographer Oded Ezer held in the Kartak class also a public lecture plus a book presentation took place. The book »Oded Ezer – The Typographer's Guide to the Galaxy« presents the experimental typography of this visionary Israeli artist and designer and was published by Die Gestalten Verlag in May.

Mit dem Vortrag »Grafische Revue« illustrierte das Grafische Büro die Wege und Irrwege des grafischen Entwerfens anhand von Recherchematerial, Skizzen und Präsentationsmaterialien. Gezeigt wurden u.a. Arbeiten für das Schauspielhaus Wien, mobilkom Austria, Art/Brut Center gugging, 6-7... festival und EOOS.

In their lecture »Grafische Revue« the Grafisches Büro illustrated the dos and don’ts of graphic design with research material, drafts and layouts and presentation material. What was presented in the lecture were works for the Schauspielhaus Wien, mobilkom Austria, Art/Brut Center gugging, 6-7... festival and EOOS.

Susanne Dechant zeigt in ihrem Vortrag die Rolle und Wahrnehmung von Frauen in der Typografie auf, und überprüft die proportionale Verteilung von Gender und Industrie. Gängige Klischees von der Minderheit der aktiven Schriftgestalterinnen in der Gestaltungsbranche werden untersucht, und mit konträr verlaufenden Ergebnissen widerlegt.

In her lecture Susanne Dechant outlined the role and the perception of women in the field of typography and scrutinized the proportional distribution of gender in this industry. She refuted common stereotypes stating that active woman typographers are a minority in the design industry with a number of contrary results.

Der Workshop »Why Publish?« von Urs Lehni und Stefan Marx beschäftigte sich mit dem Phänomen des »Independent Publishing«. Inhalt, Gestaltung, Produktion und Distribution werden hier durch Motivation des autonomen Publizierens und dem Do-It-Yourself-Gedanken gemeistert. Im Rahmen eines dreitägigen Workshops entstand auf Basis des Themas »Interview« eine kollektive Publikation, die ein Kapitel pro StudentIn umfasst, und mit dem Fotokopierer der Klasse produziert wurde.

The workshop »Why Publish?«, conducted by Urs Lehni and Stefan Marx, deals with the phenomenon of »independent publishing«. Here content, design, production and distribution are kept going and mastered through the motivation of autonomous publishing and the idea of DIY. In the frame of a three day workshop a collective publication based on the subject “interview” came into being, where each student was responsible for one chapter and which was produced with the Xerox machine of the class.

In 2008, Lichtwitz – Büro für visuelle Kommunikation [office for
visual communication] won the Joseph Binder Award for the fourth time. Moreover, the Lichtwitz team bagged a silver and a bronze Venus awarded by the Creativ Club Austria (CCA) in 2009. Among Lichtwitz’s clients there are, among others, the Wien Museum, the Kunsthaus Graz, die Vienna Film Commission and Universal Music Austria.

Stefan Sagmeister, Angewandten Absolvent und Grafik Design Ikone, kehrte erstmals an seine Ausbildungsstätte zurück, um einen Vortrag über »Dinge, die ich bisher im Leben gelernt habe« zu halten.
Zur Ankündigung seines Besuchs fiel die Wahl auf Patrick Bonatos humorvollen Plakatentwurf, der auf das Image Sagmeisters als Design-Guru Bezug nimmt, und sich an der Ästhetik von Abenteuer- und Erkenntnisreisepostern bedient. Weitere Plakatentwürfe wurden im Zuge des Vortrags im DG ausgestellt, und vom Guru persönlich unter die Lupe genommen.

»Things I’ve learned
in my life so far«

Stefan Sagmeister, alumnus of the Angewandte and already a cult designer, returned to his former training institution for the very first time to hold a lecture on "Things I’ve learned in my life so far". Patrick Bonato’s humorous design was picked for the poster announcing this event. It refers to Sagmeister’s image as a guru of design and employs the esthetics of posters for spiritual and adventure trips. Further poster contributions were exhibited on the attic –and were scrutinized by the guru himself.

Oded Ezer besuchte die Klasse um mit den Studierenden in einem zweitägigen Workshop zum Semesterthema »Das Unheimliche« zu arbeiten. Der israelische Typograf steht für eine sehr experimentelle Gestaltungsphilo-sophie, und ist durch spektakuläre Projekte, wie die mit Fäden durchzogenen »Tortured Letters« oder das im Museum of Modern Art NY gezeigte Spermien Alphabet »Typosperm«, international bekannt.

Oded Ezer visited the class for a two-day workshop with the students
on the topic of »The Uncanny«. The Israeli Typographist follows a highly experimental design philosophy, and is known internationally for his extraordinary projects such as his »Tortured Letters« or the sperm alphabet »Typosperm«, which was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

As a kick-off on the the semester’s focal theme »Branding Meaning« Hartmut Esslinger, product designer, CEO of frog design and professor of the industrial design class 2 at the Angewandte, gave a lecture on »The power and impotence of brands« at the Kartak class. frog design works in the fields of product design, branding and the design of multimedia applications for market leaders such as Apple, Microsoft, Disney, Lufthansa, MTV, DELL and Siemens. The company, which acts as a global innovation firm with studios in the US, Europe and Asia, is responsible for form and function of many of our digital and analogue daily routine helpers.

Im Rahmen der Vienna Design Week war der niederländisch- slowakische Typograf Peter Bilak an der Angewandten zu Gast. Neben dem öffentlichen Vortrag über seinen Zugang zur Schriftgestaltung mit dem Titel »On Typography and unrelated matter«, hielt Peter Bilak auch einen zwei-tägigen Workshop mit den StudentInnen der Klasse Kartak ab. Nach dem ersten Workshoptag an der Angewandten waren Peter Bilak und die StudentInnen der Klasse Kartak im Schaulabor der Vienna Design Week in der Kunsthalle am Karlsplatz zu Gast, wo sie ihre experimentelle Arbeit zu Typografie in einer öffentlichen Laborsituation fortsetzten.

Peter Bilak, Dutch-Slovakian typographer, visited the Angewandte in the course of the Vienna Design Week, not only to give a lecture titled »On Typography and unrelated matter« but also to work with the Kartak students in a two-day workshop on their type designs. After day-one at the Angewandte Peter Bilak and the Kartak students moved themselves and their work to the Schaulabor of the Vienna Design Week at Kunsthalle Wien project space, where they continued their experimental work on typography under the eyes of the interested public.

Gregor Hofbauer und Andreas Koller vom Wiener Design Studio Strukt zeigten in ihrem Vortrag »Extended Canvas« aktuelle Beispiele von Projektions- und Interaktionstechniken, die es GestalterInnen ermöglichen,
über den Leinwandrand hinaus zu denken. Das Design Studio Stukt wurde 2007 von Thomas Hitthaler, Gregor Hofbauer, Andreas Koller, Wolfgang F. Maier und Tanja Tomic gegründet. Strukt schafft interaktive Medieninstallationen und entwickelt Designkonzepte für Kunden im kommerziellen und kulturellen Event-, Ausstellungs- und Performancebereich.

Gregor Hofbauer and Andreas Koller from the Vienna-based design studio Strukt showed in their lecture titled »Extended Canvas« current examples of screening and interaction techniques, which allow designers to think beyond the canvas edge. The design studio was founded in 2007 by Thomas Hitthaler, Gregor Hofbauer, Andreas Koller, Wolfgang F. Maier and Tanja Tomic. Strukt creates interactive media installations and develops design concepts for clients in the commercial and cultural event-, exhibition- and performance field.
